Lincoln Blvd., Room 212 Oklahoma City, OK 73105 Attn: Governor Mary Fallin Re: Capital Punishment – Death Penalty Mrs. Fallin, I am writing on behalf of Kaplan University and my Ethics class. Those reasons include: Financial costs to taxpayers of capital punishment are several times that of keeping somebody in prison for a life sentence; the death penalty violates the “cruel and unusual” clause in the 8 th Amendment to the Bill of Rights which prohibits cruel and unusual punishments (Legal Information Institute, 2015); It sends the wrong message: why kill people who kill people to show killing is wrong; the prisoner’s family must suffer from seeing their loved one put to death (murdered) by the state, as well as going through emotionally-draining appeals process; and last but not least; many times over the course of years, inmates have had a botched lethal injection or execution.
